Bonsai Girls Project

Back in 2011, ASPAC Bonsai and Suiseki Convention was held in Takamatsu city, Kagawa Pre., and it was a huge success. This event made Prof. Naoyuki Furukawa of the Faculty of Economics, Kagawa Univ., initiate a “Bonsai Girls Project” in 2012 to promote special products of Kagawa Pre., like bonsai. Prof. Furukawa and BGP set “young”, “female students”, and “kawaii(cute)” as its theme to attract people’s interest because this theme is totally opposite to the old stereotype image of bonsai in Japan. At this point, BGP consisted of 23 volunteer students, who were just beginners first but got interested in bonsai. They offer bonsai information via internet (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and their website) on a daily basis to let people know more about bonsai and how nice bonsai is. They learn bonsai on their own initiative, and conduct workshops of kokedama / mini bonsai for ordinary people. They are the
only group of female university students to promote bonsai spontaneously in Japan.
